Frieze Art Fair Review by Year 11
Work by Zhang Huan
On Thursday 11th October, Year 11 art students had the
opportunity to visit the annual Frieze Art Fair. The fair itself was huge and
held a wide variety of different pieces of modern art from all over the world.
There were lots of interesting pieces, from abstract explosions of colour to
incredibly detailed paintings.
In particular we were amazed by Zhang Huan, an artist who
created his artwork completely out of ash! There were also interactive projects
around the stalls, which were created by the involvement of passers by who
could ‘make their mark’. Some pieces combined a range of different mediums like
Franz Ackermann, who used pencil, acrylic and photography which gave it a
colourful vibrant feel. Photography and sculptures were exhibited too, which
really captured movement and expression. As we walked around the endless maze
of artwork, we snacked on delicious cookies (from the Fair café) to keep our
energy levels high.
By the end of the day, we were really exhausted. But it had
definitely been an enjoyable experience and provided us with a lot of ideas and
inspiration for our GCSE project, ‘Ordinary and Extraordinary’. We especially liked
the idea of combining different ideas that wouldn’t usually be put together. At
the Frieze Art Fair there was definitely a lot of ‘extraordinary’ artwork and
we would recommend it to any future Art GCSE students.

Creative Day at the Institute of Education
Year 9 and Year 11 will be visiting the Institute of Education on the 16th November to listen to a series of lectures given by some of Britain's most prestigious artists including Grayson Perry, Cornelia Parker, Paul Slater and Barton Hargreaves. The artists will offer insights into their ideas and creative methods through discussion of their work, offering students a rare opportunity to hear artists views about contemporary art today.
RCA : ReachOut Workshop
'I learn't that stories and history can be told
in different forms oƒ visual art.'
'Now I see drawing as more than putting a pencil to
paper. It is an expression of creativity and a map of different marks.'
Year 10
Year 10 and 12 had the exciting opportunity to work with artist Sian Gledhill and the Royal Academy of Art ReachOut team. During the first part of the workshop, students were required to work within a set of rules either given by the artist or set by themselves. This stretched and challenged their perspectives of drawing and the creative process through the encouragement to use alternative drawing tools such as chairs, balloons and their feet and being restricted to only one or two repetitive movements. The second part of the workshop required students to interpret a word as a group and then create films that encompassed that word.
The students films will be part of an Exhibition at the RCA that will open this week.
